Add shade coverings and awnings
Window awnings can reduce solar heat gain by up to 65% on south-facing windows and by up to 77% on west-facing windows. They can lower your cooling costs and add charm to your home.
What to look for:
- Light-colored awnings. These keep sunlight from entering through your windows and also won't absorb heat.
- Fabric that is opaque and tightly woven. Synthetic fabrics such as acrylic and polyvinyl laminates are the best because they are water repellent and treated to resist mildew.
- Awnings with ventilation. Grommets, eyelets, or other openings along the tops and sides can provide ventilation.
