Recycle your second refrigerator

Why? Refrigerators from the year 2000 and before use 40% more energy than today's most efficient units. You probably pay more to run your spare, older appliance than your primary one in the kitchen. Recycle your extra refrigerator or freezer for instant energy savings.
Things to think about:
  • Rearrange the shelves in your main refrigerator/freezer to maximize space. This may reduce your need for a second appliance. As a bonus, refrigerators operate more efficiently when they are full.
  • If you only need the extra refrigerator or freezer space seasonally, unplug the appliance during the times of year it is left empty.
  • If you are in the market for a new refrigerator to accommodate your needs, consider buying one that is ENERGY STAR® certified.
  • Many municipalities offer to remove old refrigerators or freezers for you free of charge. Check with your local energy efficiency office for current or upcoming programs.
